For our home the most important room is our kitchen as we spend the most time in it. For me it is very important that our produce, foods, and drinks stay most fresh for as long as possible.
I will list some easy and effective ways that I clean and maintain our refrigerator to keep foods fresh.
- TOSS EXPIRED AND OLD FOOD WEEKLY: At the start of each week, I go through the food in our refrigerator and toss the old leftovers / anything expired. Spoiled food can cause bacteria growth in the refrigerator, so it’s important to do this routinely.
- A WIPE DOWN DAILY: Using a food-safe antibacterial wipe or a warm wet kitchen towel, wipe down the handles, shelves, and drawers of your refrigerator each day. If you have buttons or controls for water dispensers and ice makers, too, then wipe those as well.
- BAKING SODA FOR FRESHNESS: Baking soda can help eliminate smells and freshen your fridge or freezer. I used to leave a small box of baking soda in the corner at the top shelf, but I’ve done my research, and found that it is best to pour the baking soda into a bowl or spread it around on a large plate and leave it at the top of your fridge. If you want to use just the box, then make sure that there is a large opening on the box. “Not all smells in a refrigerator are caused by foods. There are lots of foul volatile compounds that are caused by a complex mix of bacteria and household mildew which can be present in your fridge. The outcome is the production of a variety of acids. For the most part, the smells in your fridge are made up of food particles that are floating around and eventually will end up in other foods. Using a box of baking soda acts as an absorbing agent and those smells floating around in your fridge bond to the baking soda.”
It is recommended to change the baking soda in your refrigerator every 3 months. Here is the baking soda that I use for our fridge. It works amazingly! Keep your refrigerator clean and your produce, foods, and drinks fresh!
